๐Ÿ“˜ Section 13: Tailoring the Processes

Tailoring refers to the process of adapting project management processes, tools, and techniques to fit the specific needs, size, complexity, and environment of a project. Since no two projects are exactly the same, tailoring ensures that project management practices are customized to achieve the best results for a given project.

๐ŸŽฏ Purpose of Tailoring the Processes

The PMBOK Guide provides a standard framework for managing projects, but not all processes or tools are necessary for every project. Tailoring ensures that project managers:

  • Apply the appropriate processes for the projectโ€™s size and complexity.
  • Focus on relevant outputs and outcomes rather than following unnecessary steps.
  • Increase efficiency and effectiveness by eliminating redundant processes.
  • Adapt to industry-specific or organizational standards.

๐Ÿ“Œ Tailoring Example for an IT Project

  1. Project Type: Development of a web application for a small business
  2. Tailoring Approach:
    • Simplify scope documentation to a single Product Backlog.
    • Use Kanban boards for tracking progress instead of detailed Gantt charts.
    • Skip formal Procurement Management if there are no external vendors involved.
    • Use daily stand-up meetings instead of lengthy progress reports.
